From Seed To Skin.

small seeds of promise whisper at night. scattered by winds yet holding tight.

Seeds are more than life—they are memory, identity, and resilience.

Passed down through generations, they hold the wisdom of the whenua (land), they carry whakapapa (geneology, lineage, or decent), carrying the stories of those who came before. Each seed is a promise—a link between past and future, ensuring food sovereignty, cultural survival, and ecological balance.

In many Indigenous peoples cultures, seeds are sacred relatives, nurtured with care and respect. They sustain not just bodies, but traditions, ceremonies, and the rhythms of life itself. In an ever-changing world, protecting these seeds means protecting knowledge, biodiversity, and the right to self-determination.

As there are now more than ever so many factors threatening traditional lands and food systems, Indigenous communities, and those small amount of seed collectors, who continue to safeguard and share their seeds, offering solutions rooted in harmony with nature. Their wisdom teaches us that every seed planted is an act of resistance, renewal, and hope—a reminder that the future is sown with the care we give today.

though storms may try to pull them wrong, they root in soil, deep and strong.

Seeds are powerful promises and the nutrients we gather from them can be truly transformative.

As plant lovers, and creators of whole botanical skin care, we love seeds. They are some of our favorite ingredients to work with, and play an integral role in many of our formulations. The botanical medicinal herbs grown from seed and then managed in an organic bio-dynamic way, is an integral part of all our products, whether it be the Detox tea or the Uru Hinu- Hair Oil.

Why do we love seeds, you ask? We love seeds for their near-miraculous ability to infuse their innate vitality and life force into the world and into the body. Like eggs, seeds contain an abundance of nutritive compounds, designed by nature to support the spark, birth and early stages of life. By incorporating seeds into our skin care rituals, we are able to bring these (re)generative, vitalizing, and transformative qualities into our beings. Cold-pressed organic nutrient-dense seed oils are rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins that help to hydrate, repair, and protect the skin, promoting a healthy, smooth, and glowing complexion.

Whole seeds contain protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Most seeds have an incredibly high ratio of fat in comparison to other parts of a plant, which makes them an incomparable source for lipid nutrition. We believe this speaks to the importance of fat in the role of cell development, growth, and evolution. And it clearly communicates that the nutrients we absorb from seeds are vital building blocks for our own regeneration.

carrying wisdoms from days of old, they birth the future, strong and bold.

Yet, there is a growing misconception about seed oils. Some claim they are universally harmful, but in truth, it all depends on which ones we choose. Highly refined, industrial seed oils, often found in processed foods, can contribute to inflammation, but cold-pressed, organic, nutrient-dense seed oils are profoundly beneficial, both internally and topically. As Dr. Trevor Cates, naturopathic doctor and author of Clean Skin From Within, explains: “Not all seed oils are created equal. The key is to choose unrefined, minimally processed oils that retain their full spectrum of antioxidants and essential fatty acids—these are the oils that truly nourish the skin and body.” By selecting the right oils, like rosehip, pomegranate, and sesame, we tap into the regenerative and life-giving power of seeds in their purest form. Then soak these nutrient dense oil in our home grown medicinal herbs, flowers, and rongoa.

There are few things on this planet more important than seeds. Seed-saving is more essential than ever, especially heirloom and ancestral seeds. There are seed banks and seed collectors all over the world, as well as seed saving organizations. One of the most prominent collections is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault–a massive seed-saving library on a Norwegian island in the arctic circle, that exists as a safeguard in the case of an environmental apocalypse. Here at Kimihana Arts, we are rooted in a deep respect for both self and Papatuanuku (Earth), slow regernerative beauty and well-being transcends mere skincare routines; it embodies a holistic approach to well-being that nourishes the body, mind, and soul while fostering harmony with the environment. By choosing sustainable, eco-conscious ingredients and practices, we minimize our environmental footprint and contribute to the preservation of natural resources for future generations. From ethically sourced ingredients to eco-friendly packaging and mindful consumption habits, which empowers everyone who supports Kimihana Arts to make conscious choices. if we dont grow our own from seed, we honour tikanga and support wild harvesting practices and protecting the local ngahere, which helps maintain healthy an ecosystem and protects endangered plant species.

Seeds are immeasurably important, and we are lucky to have access to them as a source of nutrition for skin and body. When interacting with the human body, the life force within the seeds, the “generative” qualities becomes regenerative. Seeds are restorative, regenerative, and rejuvenating.

a sacred land, their hope remains, floating prophecies in dry terains.

the spirit of the seed will never fade, carrying the voices that the tipuna made.

Buried deep, yet never lost, they bloom again, despite any frost.

for every seed, a story grows, a land reclaimed, awa flows.
